Effectiveness of Petit Bridge
“Petit Bridge at School”: an Erasmus+ Project
Introduction
Petit Bridge at School (PBAS) is an Erasmus+ project exploring how a simplified version of bridge can support learning, cooperation and inclusion in primary schools.
Implemented in France, Poland and the Netherlands, the project was evaluated with scientific support from the University of Vienna. The evaluation involved 391 students across multiple schools and classes, using both quantitative and qualitative methods to understand the educational impact of the programme.
What the study shows
The evaluation provides a clear and balanced view of the effects of Petit Bridge in real classroom conditions.
Social and emotional outcomes
The most consistent results concern social inclusion and emotional well-being.
The study observed statistically significant improvements in:
- emotional well-being
- relationships between students
Students also reported stronger cooperation, greater respect for partners and a growing sense of responsibility when playing together.
Engagement and classroom experience
Across all countries, the programme generated high levels of engagement.
Students described the sessions as enjoyable and different from traditional lessons. Teachers reported that students quickly became involved, made visible progress and maintained attention throughout the activities.
Observations during the sessions show that engagement is closely linked to:
- satisfaction with the group
- success in solving tasks
- the interactive and game-based format
Cognitive aspects
The study also examined mathematics-related self-confidence.
Results show no significant short-term change, but also no decline. Students’ confidence remained stable throughout the programme.
This suggests that Petit Bridge:
- mobilises reasoning, planning and decision-making
- but does not directly produce immediate academic gains
Longer or more targeted implementations may be needed to observe stronger cognitive effects.
Interpretation
Overall, the results suggest that Petit Bridge is particularly effective as a tool to support:
- cooperation and communication
- social inclusion
- emotional well-being
- engagement through structured play
