Paul Chemla : 1944 – 2025

By In News, Official announcements, Tribute On 13th October 2025

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Paul Chemla, a major and unforgettable figure in French and international bridge.

Born in Tunis in 1944, Paul Chemla first distinguished himself brilliantly in classics before choosing to devote his life to bridge. From the very beginning, his dazzling progress propelled him to the top, winning his first European title in Athens at just 26 years old and leading to a truly impressive track record:

A three-time world champion (1980, 1992, 1997), three-time European pairs champion, and winner of numerous other international competitions, he has left his mark on the history of bridge. He enjoyed many partnerships, from Michel Perron and Michel Lebel to Alain Lévy, Philippe Cronier, Maurice Salama, and, more recently, Quentin Robert.

Paul was a man with an unforgettable personality, much admired for his wit, audacity, and sense of judgment, he was also known for his incisive humour and witty remarks, which earned him as many friends as enemies. Nicknamed “the enfant terrible of French bridge,” he never left anyone indifferent.

Beyond bridge, he harboured a deep passion for opera—especially Wagner and Verdi—classical literature, and the pleasures of the table. His friends remember him as a warm, loyal man, always ready to share a good dinner or a witty anecdote.

Until recently, he shone with talent, winning selections alongside promising young bridge players. His legacy will remain that of an outstanding player, a colourful personality, and a lover of the game who profoundly influenced several generations of bridge players. The World Bridge Federation extends its sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, and playing partners.

Testimonials from his colleagues can be found on the French Bridge Federation website.
