   Student Club on Internet

A new club, especially designed for students, has been established on Bridge Base Online (BBO): the University Bridge Club.

After a successful first 'University Pairs Championship' on Sunday 12 August 2007 with more then 130 pairs participating, the University Bridge Club holds a 'University Bridge Pairs' competition every second and fourth Sunday of each month, starting at 19.00 hrs CET. 21 boards are played, with 6 minutes per board allowed.

1st Online University Bridge Championship

The first online University Bridge Championship was held in 2009-10, with the participation of 16 teams from four continents. It was a knock out competition with rounds of 32 boards, played on BBO between student teams. Italy won the final against Norway.

2nd Online University Bridge Championship

The second online University Bridge Championship started in January 2011.

A record participation of 34 teams from four continents was reached, beating the previous record of 32 teams achieved in the EUSA (European University Sports Association) competition held in Brugge, Belgium. New comers included Australia, Bulgaria, India and Venezuela.

Similarly to the first edition, this was a knockout competition of student teams played on internet, with the schedule of play determined by a draw. Each country could enter an unlimited number of teams, composed of 4-6 university students or school pupils and a captain. All players had to be between 17 and 28 years old, and have the nationality of the country they represent.

Once the organizers teamed up two teams, the captains had to play a match of 32 boards and submit the result within one month.

Results were posted on unibridge.michzimny.pl/news/2010-10-01/2nd-world-online-university-team-c, as well as the Facebook account 'Uni Bridge'.

3rd Online University Bridge Championship

The third edition of the Online University Bridge Championship started in January 2012, with a record participation of 61 teams, comprising 327 athletes from 29 countries, all over the world. This is thought to be the best attended world championship in any sport FISU history.

The competition will run through to July 2012, when the final will be played during the 6th World University Bridge Championships, in Reims, France.

During January and February 2012, the 61 teams will play in groups. The two leading teams in each group, and the four best third-ranked teams will determine the 32 teams of the knockout phase which will end with the final in July.
